Post-Finasteride Syndrome: Causes and Treatment

Finasteride, sometimes known as its brand name Propecia, is an oral medication that has been FDA approved to treat male pattern hair loss. Long term use of finasteride will cause negative side effects that can significantly reduce the quality of life in men.

Finasteride, even at low doses, may cause a reduced sperm count in men. In one study, sperm count improved dramatically for the majority of men after finasteride discontinuation. Although this single study showed that sperm count improved after discontinuing finasteride, there appears to be persistent negative symptoms which may occur in some men long after discontinuing. This evidence has been reported by many unfortunate patients and the doctors treating them. Finasteride works by decreasing androgen hormones to very low levels causing negative effects including loss of sex drive, erectile dysfunction, depression, bone and muscle loss, and fatigue. Testosterone and Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) are two of our primary androgens, DHT is actually manufactured from testosterone through a natural process in the body. Finasteride drugs disrupt this process leading to a reduction of DHT. Androgen hormones like DHT are responsible for many important functions including those previously mentioned. How to Treat Side Effects Caused by Finasteride while Also Restoring Hair

If you are a male who has been taking medications containing Finasteride or similar drug – Dutasteride- it is important to first complete a blood test to check important hormone levels like testosterone, Dihydrotestosterone, thyroid hormones, and other health biomarkers. Blood testing will help determine if any of these hormones are too low and in need of restoration to a functional level. Restoring a healthy hormone balance will help reverse the symptoms of post-finasteride syndrome. Hormone balancing can also help reduce hair loss while making hair restoration treatments more effective.
